How We Feed Our Skin Affects Brain

Have you ever thought about how our body care affects our brain?

Our bodies absorb substances from the outside in only a few different ways: through our digestion, through our lungs, and through our skin, (and intravaginally for females).

While recovering from a severe traumatic brain injury, I learned that when the brain is damaged, the blood brain barrier, or the barrier that protects the brain from many foreign substances, is also damaged.

And I wanted to heal my brain, which meant that I needed to keep any potentially harmful substances out of my body.

When it comes to introducing something into my body, it is guilty until proven innocent.

Kind of like when a stranger is at your front door. You don’t invite them in unless you know them and that they are not dangerous.

What this means to me is that I am not using any ingredient that humans have not successfully used for at least a couple hundred years.

I was already cleaning up my diet by avoiding anything artificial, genetically modified, or farmed in extremely unnatural environments. I was eating organic produce, and grass-fed, pasture-raised, and wild-caught proteins, but I realized that I didn’t know what was in my toothpaste, my deodorant, my lotion, my chapstick, or my soap/shampoo/conditioner. So I began to inspect the ingredients.

My deodorant was probably the biggest offender. I couldn’t even pronounce most of the ingredients. Same with my toothpaste, lotion, and shampoo! My bar soap was OK because I used nice natural soap, but I could not say the same for many other popular soaps.

Back in 2012, finding clean body care products was not easy. I was able to find soaps and shampoo, but even Tom’s of Maine toothpaste has ingredients that I wasn’t a fan of. So I began to make my own tooth powder and my own deodorant

Most of us don’t have the time or energy to make our own products, so I have organized some of my favorite products that are clean enough for me. And if they’re clean enough for me and you’re reading this, they may be clean enough for you! 😁:
